Book Review: Angelfall by Susan Ee-- A book about Castiel?

Check out my review of the second book in the Penryn and the End of Days Series here!

Okay, I lied. This book isn't really about everyone's favorite angel, Castiel.

But it is about Rafe, who just might be a close runner up for my favorite.

Angelfall, Susan Ee's debut novel, is about teenager, Penryn who (other than having a stellar name, seriously man) has taken on responsibilities that even a grown woman couldn't handle. She cares for a crippled younger sister and a mentally unstable mother, all during an insane angelic apocalypse.

Now going into this book, I was really wary. I've only read one other angel book (that being Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick) and I just did not enjoy it whatsoever. It kind of put me off to angel books after that. I found them cheesy, usually unrealistic, and kind of bland.

But with Angelfall, I think I've finally been converted. Susan Ee has created deep, intriguing, and super kick ass characters. Penryn is probably going to be one of my favorite heroines for a while. She's such a bad ass. Not to mention witty, intelligent, unique, and funny. I just love her.

I found the angels in this books to be very similar in some aspects to those in Supernatural, which I really enjoyed. Though they weren't so similar that I felt Ee was ripping off the show. It almost felt like a nice little shout out to the fangirls of the world. Which was awesome.

As far as Rafe goes, I really really love him. He was mysterious and brooding. However at times I found him too reminiscent of other book heroes I've read in the past. I also wish there had been more back story for him in this book. It was very frustrating.

What I think I enjoyed most of this book though was the fact that it started out as an independently published book and it now has all these positive readers. It's sort of like an indie book fairytale. And I congratulate Susan Ee on her success. You go girl!

Overall I really, really loved this book. The romance was beautiful but not too quick. The scenes were beautifully written. Honestly, there were times when this book terrified me, but I absolutely adored that. And that cliffhanger man! (SPOILERS: Rafe! Rafe! No Penryn is alive! She's right there. Get your demon winged ass down there and KISS HERRRR!)

I give this one 4.5/5 stars.

I just got the sequel last night for my birthday and it's going straight into my TBR.

Check out Angelfall by Susan Ee, it's worth a read. And while you're doing that, check out my book, The Reviled, which is on sale right now for 99¢ (shameless self promotion)!
